For the first time in its 150-year history, electrology professionals across both licensed and unlicensed states are working collaboratively toward shared standards, mutual recognition, and a clearer professional identity.
The American Electrology Association (AEA) invites electrologists throughout the United States and internationally to participate in a coordinated effort to advance the profession through formal federal evaluation.
Electrology is a distinct, specialized discipline with its own scope of practice, educational pathways, safety standards, and public health impact. It is also the only permanent method of hair removal recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Despite this, electrology is frequently misclassified or grouped with unrelated professions, resulting in regulatory inconsistency and diminished professional clarity.
Through the AEA Research & Development Initiative, in collaboration with educators and practicing professionals, the AEA is working to establish:
This initiative does not seek to override state licensure laws. Rather, it requests a formal federal evaluation to determine whether electrology should be recognized as a standalone professional discipline, distinct from cosmetology, esthetics, or other adjacent fields.
By endorsing this effort, you are adding your professional voice to a historic moment of alignment and progress for the electrology profession.
We encourage you to sign this petition, share it with colleagues, and remain engaged as we work together to strengthen, unify, and advance electrology.
